A coming-of-age story takes its readers through a character’s journey from childhood to adulthood. The genre has remained one of the most consistently popular genres not just in literature but many other forms of media. Following one’s tale of growing up is a very universal and relatable theme, especially in American novels.
To be honest, I still read coming-of-age stories even though I now quality as an adult. Growing up was never easy, and these books give a sense of relatability for myself and countless others. But what are the best, the most sought after coming-of-age American literature novels? Let’s take a look at some of the greatest out there.
5. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Where to buy
To Kill a Mockingbird is an ever popular American classic with children and adults alike. It tells the story of Jean Louise “Scout” Finch, growing up in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama during the Great Depression. Scout’s father Atticus Finch is a lawyer who chooses to defend a falsely accused Black citizen named Tom Robinson of raping Mayella Ewell, a young white woman.
The childlike innocence portrayed and Scout’s awakening to prejudice and racism is exceptionally well written. Readers will find lessons throughout the text, as well as a profound loss of innocence. Scout is trapped between the idea of what is right and wrong, and what it means to act based on your personal values. A sequel to this phenomenal book entitled Go Set a Watchman was also published in 2015.
4. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Path
This coming-of-age novel faced a lot of controversy when the author committed suicide one month after its publication. It tells the story of an aspiring poet, Esther Greenwood. Esther works as an intern in Lady’s Day Magazine in New York city as an editor. Her daily struggles involve her issues with identity, and social norms which result in mental breakdowns.
It is devastating to read what Esther went through as a writer and as a young woman. She constantly battles against her inner conflicts and suicide attempts. Vivid descriptions and emotional prowess made this story a remarkable one.
3. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

Where to buy
This coming-of-age novel made it to the list of top 10 YA novels according to Goodreads users.
Charlie is a wallflower – shy and always alone in the corner of the room with his unique perspective and thoughts. With the help of friends Sam and Patrick, he struggles to deal with his awkward teenage years and his first year of high school.
Written in a series of letters from Charlie to a friend, The Perks of Being a Wallflower is the story of what it is like to grow up under traumatic circumstances. Charlie’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from his best friend’s suicide doesn’t make things any easier. In a world full of mix tapes, books, sex, first dates, and family dramas, will Charlie ever feel infinite?
2. The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Autism looks different for many people, and it varies. Christopher is very fond of prime numbers and country’s capital. He despises the color yellow and being touched by other people, and he loves animals more than anyone human. One day, he witnesses the neighbor’s dog with a rake stuck in its body. He decides to investigate what’s happened to the animal and heads off to solve the case.
The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time is one the most unforgettable coming-of-age stories I’ve ever read. Not only does it provide a new perspective, but it also reminds us of how curious we are as young individuals, and how willing to stand up for the cast aside and forgotten.
1. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

Where to buy
Thirteen-year-old Theo Decker was left by his father at a young age. He lives with his mother, but after an accident at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA) causes her death, and Theo gains possession of an expensive painting called The Goldfinch.
Theo’s life then becomes about restoring the antique painting and living with his father, and along the way he becomes acquainted with drugs. Throughout his mission, we follow his life-altering choices and the struggles that plague him. A heavy read, but one well worth checking out.
