8. And I Darken by Kiersten White

7. The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi

The Gilded Wolves is a mix of historical fiction and fantasy for young adults. It takes place in an alternate 1889 Paris, following the exploits of a varied cast of characters who are racing to recover an ancient artifact. 6. Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

This gripping historical fiction novel is set during the American Revolutionary War and tells the story of Isabel, a thirteen-year-old girl who is enslaved and seeking freedom in the midst of war.
What we love about it: This poignant tale begs questions of loyalty, ethics, and the fight for justice, making the reader reflect long after finishing the book.

5. The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

This historical fiction book was named a Newbery Honor Book in 2016, and we absolutely understand why. Following Ada, a young girl with a clubfoot, it traces her journey through the English countryside as she experiences the evacuation of her home in London.
What we love about it: At times heartbreaking, this novel is a moving look at identity, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit.
4. Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein
