Silo season 2 ended just recently, but the anticipation for Silo season 3 is already building. Announced just this week by the Apple TV+ X account, Silo has been renewed for not just season 3 but season 4 as well. Based on Hugh Howey’s gripping dystopian Wool, Shift, and Dust book series, the show delves into a world where humanity’s survivors struggle to stay alive in deep underground silos.

As we know from season 1 and currently streaming season 2, Juliette, the main character, survives the outside world that is deemed toxic by the inhabitants of the silo and manages to survive and reach another silo. The fact that Juliette did not clean and went over the hill enthralls the habitants of Silo 18, Juliette’s original home silo, who become fervent supporters of “JL” and are about to incite a rebellion.

This major plotline of a new rebellion and how Juliette plans to get back to her silo, will clearly not get resolved in only two seasons. This is why Silo has been renewed for seasons 3 and 4, effectively splitting the last two books, Shift and Dust, into two seasons.

Season 3 Started Filming

silo season 3 mines

Silo TV Show is a massive project that is taken up a lot of time and space to film. A lot of the sets seen in the show are actually made on a sound stage.

That being said, Silo seasons 3 and 4 are being filmed back to back and season 3 has already started production. As mentioned in an interview with Empire Magazine, Graham Yost, said:

We’ll be shooting all of 2025 into early 2026 … There’s a big location that we’re going to introduce toward the end of Season 3 that plays a very big role in Season 4. And because we shoot all 10 episodes [of each season] at the same time, we had to write Season 3 and then basically go right into writing season 4.

This makes a lot of sense given the amplitude of the show.

Season 3 & 4 Filming Back-to-back

Additionally, we know that the newly announced season 3 and 4 will be shot back-to-back. This is something that was mentioned in the Empire Magazine Podcast where they spoke to Rebecca Ferguson and Tim Cook about the Silo series.

She mentioned that:

I have scheduled my home life. I’ve got my Pilates in. I’ve got a reformer on set. … when you get involved in something like this, the books are a certain quantity and mass, and we all knew how far it would have to go.

Silo Season 3 Potential Release Date

As we currently know, Silo season 3 and 4 are being filmed back to back in the UK, at the Hoddesdon Studios in Hertfordshire. Based on the previous filming and release schedules, we can roughly estimate the potential Silo season 3 release window.

Filming Silo Season 1 started in August of 2021 and lasted until May 2022, which is about 10 months. The series then appeared on Apple TV+ and was released on May 5th, 2023.

Season 2 began filming in June of 2023, however, it was paused during the Hollywood strikes. The production began again in December of 2023 and continued until March 2024. The second season then premiered in November of 2024, which is about 4 months of filming and 7 months before the release of the season, giving us a total of 11 months.

Given these filming and production patterns, given the fact that all of the sets are already done and ready from seasons 1 and 2, and also given the fact that we know Silo season 3 should continue to film until early 2026, we can estimate that Silo season 3 could potentially be released in the summer or early fall of 2026.

If they finish filming in early 2026 and follow the pattern of Silo season 2 which was done in March of 2024 but only released in November of the same year, the potential release window of summer to early fall of 2026 makes a lot of sense.

Silo Season 3 Story

Silo season 2 wraps up the story of the first book Wool. The next book in line to follow the story is Shift. However, the story of Shift is very different from the first book…

Shift is the season book in the Silo trilogy and (no pun intended) shifts the story to a completely different place. However, this might be slightly altered because of the ending of Silo Season 2, which will impact how Season 3 starts and plays out.

The third season will throw us into a prequel timeline of the Silo universe. Shift explores Silo 1, the main HQ silo in the universe, and follows a different set of casts and characters. It will introduce us to the inner workings of Silo and the Silo universe; why they were built, what psychological effects being responsible for all silos does it have on the inhabitants of Silo 1, and the story that develops from that.

However, Hugh Howey, the author of the Silo books as well as one of the people closely working with the production of the show, said that season 2 has given a blueprint of how they might intercut between two different stories.

This hints to us that Silo Season 3 might have a dual storyline such as what Silo Season 2 had. We can mo

Will Juliette Be In Silo Season 3?

rebecca ferguson as juliette nichols

Yes, Juliette, the main character of the Silo TV show, will be in Silo season 3. She is the main protagonist who we’ve come to love and protect over the last two seasons. It would not make sense to not have her in the third season.

But this is not just speculation… One of the showrunners, Graham Yost, confirmed that Juliette will play a major role in Silo season 3.

He is quoted saying:

In the book Shift, Juliette doesn’t appear until like the last page, right? It’s about this silo [No. 18], but it’s also the origin story of the whole silo project… I would say that we have Rebecca Ferguson playing Juliette, and she is not just going to be in the last scene of the season. … Juliette would be a big part [of Silo season 3]

So rest assured that Juliette will be in Silo season 3!

Hugh Howey has recently done a Reddit AMA thread on Silo season 2 and has answered a lot of questions about the show as well as season 3. He has confirmed that the third season will have a lot of new characters.

We can expect a whole new cast to join the current characters of the Silo universe!

As the story and more information are released down the line about the additional cast of Silo season 3, we can only speculate who would be an extra character, if any, in the newest season of the hit show. However, it is safe to assume that the main cast of the Apple TV+ show will return in Silo season 3.
