You know that feeling – you’re deeply invested in a series, loving every page, and then the author does something that makes you want to throw the book across the room. Maybe they killed off your favorite character for shock value, completely changed a beloved character’s personality, or wrapped up a complex plot with a “it was all a dream” ending.
For me, it was in a certain dystopian series, Allegiant (the final book in the Divergent series), when Tris’s sister Caleb sacrifices herself to support the very genetic purity system that had caused all the discrimination and suffering throughout the trilogy.
After spending three books fighting against societal divisions and control, watching her ultimately validate these oppressive ideas felt like a complete betrayal of the series’ core themes about freedom and identity.
Years later, I’m still not over it!
