So, I just emerged from my nearly 3-hour Wicked experience (my popcorn didn’t even make it to “Defying Gravity”), and while Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were magical, I can’t help but wonder – what exactly are they going to do with Part 2? The first movie already covered the friendship buildup, the Fiyero romance, and the dramatic green transformation. Are we really going to spend another three hours watching Elphaba essentially hide in a castle?
Here’s what’s keeping me up at night: the Broadway show wraps everything up neatly in Act 2 without feeling stretched. But Hollywood’s obsession with splitting book adaptations (looking at you, Hunger Games and The Hobbit) has created this pressure to pad runtime with extra content. Will we get unnecessary subplots about the flying monkeys’ backstories? A 20-minute musical number about how to properly melt a witch?
The ironic part? The first movie could have easily trimmed some scenes, yet now they need to stretch the remaining material into another full feature.
Are we about to witness some serious story padding, or does the creative team have some surprising tricks up their sleeves that’ll make us forget we already know how this ends?
