So it’s possibly happening – ACOTAR might be getting a book-to-TV show adaptation on Hulu. After seeing what happened with Shadow and Bone and The Mortal Instruments, I’m sitting here having heart palpitations about how they’re going to visualize my precious Night Court. Will Velaris look like a cheap Renaissance fair with fairy lights? Will the Illyrian wings look like cosplay props?
Let’s be honest: we all have our perfect casting choices burned into our brains. We’ve spent years debating who could possibly capture Rhysand’s “perfect masculine beauty” (good luck, casting directors), and whether any human woman could embody Feyre’s journey from starving artist to High Lady. Don’t even get me started on how they’ll handle the steamy scenes – will we get the full Chapter 55 treatment or a watered-down YA version?
The most terrifying part? Once we see these characters on screen, those images might override the versions we’ve carried in our imaginations. The Rhysand in my head doesn’t look like any Hollywood actor, and I’m not ready to let him go.
Are we setting ourselves up for disappointment by expecting any adaptation to match the epic scale of what’s in our heads, or should we start preparing ourselves now to separate the books from the show?
