Summer 2020 has shaped up to be very different from the usual: cancelled events, socially distanced family visits, and many of us not feeling comfortable being around crowds. Thankfully, even in this anti social climate, there’s one thing we can all count on: Netflix. The streaming giant has delivered many a literary adaptation in the past (The Witcher, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before & The Haunting of Hill House to name a few) and now they’re jumping into the ever popular world of young adult fantasy with Cursed.
Updated Friday July 17th: Netflix has released a virtual experience website for Cursed which can be found here: Discover Cursed Virtual Experience. To get the full interactive experience, it is best to visit the website on a mobile device.
Based on the novel of the same name written by Thomas Wheeler and illustrated by the legendary Frank Miller, Cursed flips the legend of King Arthur on its head. This take follows Nimue, originally the enchantress who brings the famed sword Excalibur to Arthur. This time, the young sorceress herself takes center stage, tasked with delivering the sword to Merlin. After her village is slaughtered, she teams up with Arthur himself, a mercenary who agrees to help her. However, she’s about to discover that there is much more to her destiny than delivering the sword.
The small screen adaptation stars Katherine Langford in the title role (of 13 Reasons Why fame – another book adaptation), Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings) as Merlin, and Devon Terrell (Barry) as Arthur. The trailer has revealed sweeping visuals and high quality visual effects that showcase how Netflix is really stepping up their production budget.
