Can’t Get Over The Last Of Us? These Books Capture The Same Vibes

May 11, 2025

Happy New Year fiction friends! It’s officially 2023, and that means a whole new year of books to talk about and movies to watch…more of the same sounds like just what the doctor ordered. To kick things off, this January we’ll be talking about every YA authors’ bread and butter: Dystopian fiction. All month long, we’ll be traveling to distant planets, competing in cutthroat competitions and being brainwashed by a totalitarian government entity. In our minds, obviously. Come along for the ride while we tackle trope filled, and-possibly-overwrought genre, with some lesser-known titles sprinkled in for good measure.

Why do readers have such a love of dystopian fiction? It’s a question we’ve been asking ourselves for a while now. It seems as though every year there are more and more of these dark and often bleak stories. Whether set on an alien planet or Earth hundreds of years in the future, dystopian fiction posits many questions about the current and future state of the world.

This week, we’re asking once and for all what makes these tales so endlessly popular. Is it the potential warnings in the texts that fascinate us, or perhaps the note of optimism that often graces the final pages of these stories? Be sure to join us if you’ve ever been curious about why you’re always picking up the latest dystopian fiction release at the bookstore.

Enjoying Dystopian fiction month? Be sure to check out all of our coverage of the genre over at https://fully-booked.ca/. We’re a listener supported podcast! Please consider pledging and helping Fully Booked to grow our library over at https://ko-fi.com/fullybooked, or by leaving us a 5 star rating and review wherever you’re listening. Thanks bookworms, and don’t forget to keep on reading.
