The Sweetest Getaway DEALS
Sasha Preston’s debut novel, The Sweetest Getaway, published in July of 2025, is a cozy heist and a story of female empowerment and friendship. With a sweetener as the unexpected treasure in the novel, Preston creates an action-packed adventure that utilizes multiple character perspectives and elaborate scheming, with many elements at play that lead to some loss of focus on the main plot.

The Sweetest Getaway Summary

The Sweetest Getaway is set in Omaha and follows Jennifer, a charming dreamer who works for Essentrix Labs, a food company, who is enticed to get involved in a heist against her employer by her roommate, Nari.
Jennifer is promised riches to start her life as a surf shop owner in Hawaii and to change the lives of the women oppressed by Essentrix Labs. Throughout the story, Jennifer develops more friendships with a group of women who end up being their heist team.
Working as a team and empowering each other is the only way to succeed in their elaborate, high-stakes plan. Preston weaves in some rom-com elements to the story without making romance a central plot point, though there were some red herrings at times.
Strengths
The Sweetest Getaway is a cozy heist that keeps readers enthralled until the last page. Jennifer is a character who seems somewhat far-fetched in her daydreams, but I found myself rooting for her success by the end of the book.
Preston introduces a number of characters who keep the plot interesting and moving along, leading the reader to look for suspicious behaviour from each and wondering how Jennifer and Nari will succeed in their high-stakes plan.

Weaknesses
While the addition of many characters had its advantages in some ways, in others, it distracted from the heist and the tension of the heist itself. Many times, the characters had a lot of development and then were not reintroduced, or they seemed to be more necessary to the plot than they ended up being.
There were many red herrings being thrown into the story without a clear conclusion, to the point where, as a reader, I struggled to stay focused on the overall storyline. The ending consisted of everything tied up into an improbable, neat little bow, with characters acting very unrealistically for the situation.

The Verdict
This cozy heist is unexpectedly action-packed and refuses to allow any romantic relationship to override the story of women’s empowerment and friendship. The main characters never doubt each other, not even when there is an anonymous tip submitted that could potentially foil the plan.
There could have been some better use of red herrings to add some twists to the story, and the plot was somewhat linear for a heist. Overall, I finished the novel feeling satisfied that the storylines had concluded, albeit in a bit of an overly simplistic way for some characters.
