In today’s age, it feels like media is always at the tip of your fingers waiting for you to reach out and grab it. It’s easy to fall into its grasp and spend hours doom-scrolling. But if you are already consuming media, why not make it something worth consuming?

We are already very dependent on technology, and what would happen if our world changed fast and dramatically? Well, many authors and many people imagine this exact scenario. In comes post-apocalyptic books. This is a genre of novel that took off rapidly and ever since then has been a popular and marketable genre.

To make it as easy to get books as it is to doom scroll, kindle has free books for you to download and read. Here’s a list of post-apocalyptic books that are free on Kindle and easy to access.

Note:
We’ve updated the article to add the missing Kindle links which are a pretty important part of the content, for our reader’s convenience.

Solar flares have started, and it has caused all the lights to go out. This book follows the stories of four unique characters. Each one had to deal with the consequences of the solar flares and their own actions before the events that occurred at the start of the novel.

This is the first in a series and the series is full of high stakes, tension, and thrills. It is highly character-driven and full of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. A great post-apocalyptic book for you to dive into if you are ready for adventure, multiple storylines, and a great plot-driven book.

2. Frozen Homestead by Marie Wilkens

Kindle

After the death of their grandfather,  Penelope Geller and her brothers inherit their grandfather’s cabin. When looking around they are surprised when they find a bomb shelter on the property. Not thinking anything of it in the moment, they go on with their lives. But when an electric magnetic pulse strikes, the bomb shelter, and this cabin are their safe spot and sanctuary.

A blizzard hits causing everyone to be nearby of one another and adds its own set of issues. But as the blizzard goes on, they never realize they’re about to have bigger problems than a storm to contend with.

EMP seems to be a recurring/trendy theme for post-apocalyptic books these days. I also have seen people preparing for this in real life, so who’s to say this sub-genre will stay in the land of fiction?

3. Lights Out by W.J. Banner

Kindle

When life and society are at the peak of technical advancements, what would happen if someone hit reset?

Lights Out explores the possibility of a secret society of people who are not happy with how technology is taking over. When they go to hit the reset button on society, they themselves are sabotaged. Not only is society plunged into darkness with an electric magnetic pulse, but at the exact same time nuclear bombs are set off.

Everything is now in chaos. Every day is a fight to survive, and this story highlights human resilience and desperation to survive anything.

4. The Navigator by P.M. Johnson

Kindle

It’s 2031 and a meteor has crashed into Earth, causing a weird weather phenomenon – rain made of fire. It is so hot it instantly vaporizes millions. After this, the long winter, or another ice age, kills billions more, and in between all of this humankind rages war upon one another.

This story of The Navigator picks up hundreds of years after the disastrous events. We are in a place of fragile peace and the beginnings of prosperity. That is, until someone decides to bring a war machine and start a war with the intent of taking over the world.

One scientist has discovered something that could change the tides or doom humanity. But before he can do anything with his discovery he passes away mysteriously and suddenly. He leaves his secret to another who now has to find a way to implement the plan and save the planet.

Books 2, 3, and 4 in the series are also available if you are in the mood to do some binge-reading!

5. His Last Companion by Sophia Conway

Kindle

This book has glowing reviews! His Last Companion drags you into the story of the last man alive. While all of humanity has perished, Isaac has managed to survive. He is ready for the day death comes calling for him, and is not scared or surprised when death shows up on his doorstep.

Death comes ready to chat and prepare Isaac for what is to come next. Moving and instantly addicting, this is a great read to pick up on these long winter nights!

6. Moonchild by Kate L. Mary

Kindle

Book 1 in a series, Moonchild will capture you and keep you entertained!

Airships rule the skies, greed, and corruption are running rampant and people are just collateral damage. We are back to needing coal, and it’s not simply a job. It’s forced labor and slavery to work in the mines. Our main character has worked hard to keep her freedom, but that all starts to unravel when her best friend is kidnapped and forced into the mines to work.

She ends up being rescued by none other than pirates and is forced into a whole new type of greed, corruption, cons, and fugitives. They run a coal smuggling operation and now are forcing her to go back to the one place she swore she would never return to…

7. The Last 0-Day by B.R Russell

Kindle

This is a whole new take on a determined cop who is overworked.

The cybernetics revolution will not give up what they want. It is their way or the highway. And there is an investigator who is looking for who stole her life.

This book will take you into the dark alleys, the experiments, and what happens when you are on the wrong side of a war.

Full of cybernetics and experiments, this book reminds me of sci-fi mixed with a necromancer and a bit of hope. A truly unique storyline that has adventure woven throughout.

8. The Compound Brad by Cisco

Kindle

Given a few days of relaxation, a group of friends want to make the most of what little time they have. Because right after this they are all going to bootcamp.

Their compound is safe and secure – for now. And that is because everyone trains hard to defend their safe place from those who will try to bring it down.

There is a battle coming soon, and they all must be prepared to defend their home with their lives.

9. The Long Dark: Descent by B.J. Farmer

Kindle

A slightly different take on the post-apocalyptic book that you may come to know, this novel takes us to a secluded island.

A group of oil workers find themselves stranded after a freak accident causes a power outage. They are on a remote island in the middle of a harsh winter.

The group decides to make the journey on foot to get help. This journey is lonesome, cold, and perilous. One in the group is injured and the party has yet to see any life. Making the decision, they decided to break into what seems to be an abandoned house to get aid for their friend. What the group discovers in that cabin will lead them on a path of unexpected discoveries, and perilous adventure.

10. Crash by Michael Robertson

Kindle

Note to readers: This book has aspects of horror and contains scenes that may be upsetting for some readers

Crash is super intense. In a world where gas, power, and electricity are shut off, food is scarce and people are angry. The poor are against the rich and are scavenging and murdering any of them they can find.

We start off with our main character, who was once living a very privileged life. Huddled in his house, alone with his son he has regretted the decisions that have led to this point. He had the chance to escape when his wife and daughter did but he refused to. Now he is facing the consequences of his own actions. But his actions did not impact just him, they impacted his son as well.

Now he has to escape the mob of people coming his way and save himself and his son. With no power, food, gas, or means of escape, he really has very few options. As he is trying to figure out what happened and what led to the world ending and leaving everyone in this scenario, his secrets are starting to crumble around him.

Here’s to doom-scrolling, technology, and the end of the world as we know it! Happy reading and I hope one of these books piqued your interest.
