Liane Moriarty is a top-selling Australian fiction writer who published her first novel, Three Wishes, in 2004. She has written 9 novels and 3 children’s books. Apples Never Fall is her latest novel, released in September 2021. What I love most about Liane’s writing is how realistic and relatable her characters are as well as how relevant and riveting her story-telling is.

What does Liane Moriarty write?
A recent article on Shondaland will tell you that Liane Moriarty does not want to be called a thriller writer. After reading a few of her books, I agree. Even though Liane has a talent for creating suspense, I wouldn’t put her in the thriller category. Mystery? Maybe, but not quite. A lot of her work is based on unveiling a secret towards the end of the book. While the build-up to it is thrilling enough, it can feel a little anti-climactic if you go in with that pre-conceived notion. She knows that her strength lies in her characters. So, what genre does Liane Moriarty’s work fall into? According to the Washington Post, Liane Moriarty’s books are categorized as “women’s fiction”.
Personally, I feel that Moriarty’s novels are hard to categorize (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing!). They don’t only have complex stories involving women’s lives or their journey, they have a whole range of characters. There are also a mix of elements including fear, suspense, mystery, drama, comedy, love, and even darker psychological elements, making reading her books a very cerebral experience.
All in all, Liane Moriarty writes more than just “women’s fiction”. Both the articles in the Washington Post as well as the Sydney Morning Herald point out the blatant fact that there really isn’t a category called “men’s fiction” and the disparity that female writers face versus male writers. Without going off on a tangent, it’s still important to highlight the misogyny in the literature industry (knowing that for centuries women have pretended to be men when publishing).

Which Liane Moriarty Books are also t.v series?
As of writing this article, two of Liane Moriarty’s novels have been produced into t.v. shows – ‘Big Little Lies’ and ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’. There are rumors that the rights to the majority of her books have been bought by film-makers. Whether more television shows are expected or a full feature film (movie) is yet to be seen.

What is ‘Apples Never Fall’ about?
Apples Never Fall is a story about the Delaney family who live in Sydney, Australia. Joy and Stan Delaney are retired tennis coaches who have four adult children, Amy, Logan, Troy and Brooke. This story revolves around a series of events leading up to and after the disappearance of Joy Delaney. As the story unravels, we examine the lives of all the Delaney’s and their complicated relationship with tennis.
Everything seems to somehow be connected including the mysterious stranger who showed up at the Delaney residence with a cut on her face. Joy and Stan had let the girl stay over until she could sort herself out. This fact alone built up a lot more intrigue as we try to figure out whether this stranger is somehow involved in Joy’s disappearance? Additionally, both the police as well as the Delaney children are wondering if Stan could have murdered his wife. What happened to Joy Delaney? Read this incredible book to find out!
