What is so great about a piece of classic literature? To answer this, we need to first explore what defines a piece of literature as a classic. In addition to discussing the defining features of a classic novel, we delve into why classic literature is more valuable than popular literature, what a modern classic is, and a must-read list of classics.

Is classic literature a genre?

No. Classic literature is a category rather than a genre.

What are the benefits of reading classic literature?

Reading, in general, gives you greater empathy as it enables you to be able to see different points of view. It is said that every time you read and re-read a classic, you take away something different, something more.

Classic book stack

Besides giving you excellent insight into pop culture references or a leg up on trivia night at the local bar or pub, a deeper understanding of classics makes for very interesting conversation. In the right crowd you can appear to be more worldly, classy, knowledgeable, and distinguished. Reading classics sets you aside from the rest of the crowd. To summarize, the main benefit of reading classic literature is whatever you take away from it!

What are the features of classic literature?

So, what makes a book classic literature anyway? A book is categorized as a “classic” once it is deemed to have made a lasting influence over a certain period of time. Read the Classics by Matthew Doucet sums up classics as “the books that nurtured human thought” and explains why they hold such a time-honored place in the literary canon.

Italo Calvino, in his book, Why Read the Classics, says that the number one defining attribute of a classic is when people describe that they are ‘rereading’, not ‘reading’.

Why is classic literature more valuable than popular literature?

Classics have got be more valuable than popular literature if schools prescribe them, right? While many kids may have hated the classics prescribed in school or simply found them boring, I’m sure that they still learned something valuable from the story.

As described above, classics aren’t simply books that have withstood the test of time, they are also widely accepted to be books that are thought-provoking. This is why they’re still relevant where other ‘popular’ books may have been long forgotten.

What is modern classic literature?

While Goodreads describes a modern classic as a classic written after WWI, an article on Book Riot describes a modern classic as classics that were published after 1950 but are at least Modern Classic literature is thought to be classics that were published more recently within the last 50 years. Some examples of modern classics include The Secret History by Donna Tartt, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Is Harry Potter a classic literature?

Harry Potter books are not classics just yet though they could soon be classed as modern classics, for sure. Harry Potter books were published between 1997 to 2007 and are still largely classified as popular literature in 2022.

Which novel is an example of classic literature?

Book cover - 1984 by George Orwell

There are so many great examples of classic novels that I’ve compiled a list (in no particular order) for you:

  1. The Odyssey by Homer
  2. The Iliad by Homer
  3. Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
  4. Hamlet by William Shakespeare
  5. Moby-Dick by Herman Melville
  6. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
  7. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  8. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  9. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  10. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Farisha’s favourite thing to do, in classic bibliophile style, is to curl up with a book and a cup of tea. She loves a good mystery, fantasy, folklore, adventure, romance, science fiction and the occasional non-fiction book. Since her love of travelling came to a halt, Farisha has become a “plant mum” to a number of plants (the count being somewhere around 30!). While tending to her potted plants on her apartment balcony down under, she dreams of someday being a writer herself.
