The thought of a Cozy Mystery suggests sitting by a warm fire all snuggled up in a comfortable blanket on a wintry Sunday afternoon or reading a lighter novel for a relaxing day at the beach. However, what does this type of fiction suggest?

By definition, this subgenre of mystery crime fiction has all the required elements, but it is toned down; this type of thriller is the most subtle form of the traditional murder mystery. In such enigmatic stories, there are no harsh or vulgar words or graphic descriptions of the crimes. Such elements are alluded to without mentioning the vivid details most crime stories depict in great detail.

These stories are much lighter in tone with a small-town approach to life; they suggest intimate moments without giving explicit information. This allows for a lightweight crime narrative that, although it often deals with a severe crime such as murder, doesn’t feel as significant as most murder mysteries.

The Elements Of A Cozy Mystery

These mystery stories include a protagonist who is often a woman; there is a crime that does not seem as bad, a victim who dies, but they do it off-scene with only the essential details mentioned, as well as one or more suspects. Our central character, an innocuous member of the small community such as a librarian, an innkeeper, or even a member of the clergy, to name a few, is as seen in the novels of the Miss Marple series by Agatha Christie.

In these stories, Miss Marple is an amateur sleuth living in a small English village in the UK. The author stated that she was loosely based on her own grandmother. Basically, the protagonist in these mysteries is likable but always has some characteristics that annoy other community members. In addition, the antagonists are not entirely evil or that dark, nothing like the serial killers often depicted in many of today’s more gruesome details in more modern mysteries.

The Choices

The genre’s popularity has led to a total of 17 subgenres, which is quite impressive. They all follow the standard tropes, as mentioned above: the amateur investigator, a fun and relatable sidekick with the rest of the characters.

But this easily leads to endless possible combinations: academic, where the plot centers around a college campus or even a boarding school where a teacher or English professor since teachers have a keen sense of observation and can solve the crime. Then we have an animal or a pet who helps the human solve the crime; these are especially fun if you are an animal lover and know your pet is intelligent.

a-high-end-finish

We continue with the bookstore or library subgenre, which often deals with book clubs, so popular still, an owner or even a mystery writer. Even crafting cozy mysteries ranging from scrapbooking groups to more substantial crafts can lead the recreational investigator to solve the crime.

In the same vein, we have the culinary mystery, where authors often explore different types of cuisine to educate the reader about regional or ethnic cuisines and solve the crime in the process. There is also the gardening mystery where, once again, the main character’s prowess in this field allows him to see what others cannot and solve the wrongdoing. Needless to say, the medical subgenre allows all sorts of medical workers to use their know-how to find the culprit.

This is closely followed by cultural whodunits where the sleuth tracker uses his knowledge of the culture to solve the offense. Another fun subgenre is the historical mystery, which educates us about different periods, past or present, and figures out the malfeasance. Another related category is an interest group, such as stamp collecting or any hobby that would be a good setting for another wrongdoing to be stopped.

There are also more, akin to any felony at an Inn, or a B&B or more, and then there are misdeeds on a trip at the beach. Basically, any setting offers an opening for a creative author. There are also mysteries for the romantic in you or senior citizens; even the paranormal is often included. The only limitation to these types of puzzles is one’s lack of imagination.

They can be written as sole type, but so many combinations are possible; they can include situations in the workplace, when shopping, in the neighborhood, or at the park, which can be intermingled with blackmail, theft, or so many others.

The Next Move

in-the-company-of-witches

We must remember that a cozy mystery is there to help lighten the mood while still stimulating our inexperienced detective without any unwanted or undesired nasty images or overly detailed descriptions that can lead to troubled sleep.

Our love of cozy mysteries is not limited to reading; there are also countless TV shows and even radio broadcasts available, and these days, with the growing popularity of podcasts, the possibilities are endless. So, choose one of the possible cozy mysteries out there and enjoy!
