The Nevernight Chronicles: Revenge Across 3 Tales

The Nevernight Chronicles is a series that I loved reading! The series has unique characters, a flawed heroine, and the focus is not to be a hero, but to achieve the revenge one has dreamed about.

Focusing on how to be a perfect assassin, the chronicles are bloody, dark, and full of enough back stabbing plot twists to make any reader happy. No one can be trusted, and every turn produces another lie or devious plot. Reaching the “Red Church” is a journey in and of itself, but once you make it, how can you know who to trust when everyone spends their time trying to kill you?

Her Revenge

Protagonist Mia is broken and overflowing with hate and rage directed towards the man who murdered her entire family in front of her. Now, her goal in life is to become a member of the Red Church, a murderous cult who work as assassins for hire. Once she becomes part of this group, she will be able to finally track him dow and exact her revenge. Even if the Red Church has it own code of ethics and morals, nothing can get in the way of her ultimate goal.

“The books we love, they love us back. And just as we mark our places in the pages, those pages leave their marks on us. I can see it in you, sure as I see it in me. You’re a daughter of the words. A girl with a story to tell.”

Mia herself is also concealing a secret of her own- that is, she’s hiding her true identity. Not who she was before her parents were murdered, but who she became immediately following this trauma. She is someone to whom the darkness speaks, a person who carries shadow with her. And lurking in this darkness withe her is her demon companion, who takes the shape of a small house cat. Never apart and never afraid, Mia and her familiar are two peas in a pod, forever reaching towards her goals of revenge together.

The Nevernight Chronicles: A Review

Creating an alluring and addicting fantasy world, Jay Kristoff creates an immersive world, with each story functioning as a perfect lead into the following tale. Great attention to detail was taken with the world and characters-I read all three books back to back while anticipating the next part of the story. By taking the time to fully develop the players in this dangerous game, one feels completely immersed in the story and invested in its outcome.

One of the standouts of the Nevernight story was the handling of the narration; the narrator being unnamed, and incredibly sarcastic. All three stories contain footnotes and explanations of what references are made throughout each novel. Omnipresent and deeply rooted in the story, you’re given a sense of a properly formed personality from both the narrator and the characters, a difficult feat.

The Nevernight Chronicles are well worth picking up! It is a bit dark, and full of blood, murder, and love sprinkled in for good measure. All of the quirks that come along with an assassin bent on revenge and willing to sacrifice everything to achieve the skills needed. Anything you could want in a revenge fantasy series.
