Written in 2009 and set in the English countryside during the 1950s, this book is a great take on the classic old-fashioned mystery novel. Young, witty, picked on by her sisters, with an undying love for chemistry, our main character Flavia has many facets.
At the young age of 11, she had to grow up without a mother. Flavia has no memories of her mom, which is a sore point for her as her older sister can remember their mother.
As strange events start happening around the house, Flavia notices more arguments between their gardener and a red-headed stranger. The housekeeper has found many dead animals and seen bad omens, and no one can explain anything about this mystery. When the red-headed stranger turns up dead on their property Flavia’s dad becomes the prime suspect. Flavia knows her dad did not commit the murder and is determined to prove her point.

“Like the spellbinding psychological suspense in The Girl on the Train and Luckiest Girl Alive, Megan Miranda’s novel is a nail-biting, breathtaking story about the disappearances of two young women—a decade apart—told in reverse.”
This book asks the classic question “How far will we go to protect those who we love?” Written in a unique style, we start at day 15 of disappearance and go backward to day 1 in order to solve the disappearance of a missing girl. The same girl who years ago was the alibi for Nic and her friends when Nic’s best friend went missing from the same city.
Full of twists, unexpected turns, and dead ends and nothing to go off of, this book solves the mystery in an unexpected way.

With an unnamed narrator, we hear the story of a young 20-year-old who falls in love with an older gentleman. After a rushed courtship, they get married and head back to his mansion. However, the mansion is not at all what it seems. Everyone there is haunted by the memory of her new husband’s first wife.
Everyone keeps comparing the narrator to the husband’s late wife, and isolates and heckles her into isolation. To top it off, her husband regrets marrying her and is still in love of his first wife. Or is he? Something is not quite right in this mansion and everyone seems to be covering up a secret or two. Getting to the bottom of this mystery becomes more and more twisted as time goes on.
Narrowing it down to just 5 mystery books was hard to do, so many people suggested amazing-sounding books to read. In my opinion, these 5 seemed very intriguing and had a varied writing style and subject matter throughout. I hope you enjoy these, and if you have more suggestions leave them in the comments!
